Information
Charlene Teters was born on April 25, 1952 in Spokane, Washington. She was raised near Spokeane Indian Reservation and was a Native American artist, educator and a lecturer. She attended the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), in New Mexico and graduated with an Associate of Fine in painting in the year 1986. Charlene Teters furthered her studies at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting in 1988. Upon completing her studies, Teters began graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Department of Art and Design, and graduated with with a Master of Fine Arts in painting.
Since then, Teter has had her works featured in major exhibitions and collections. While at the University of Illinois, she led an upsurge in efforts to get rid of the Native American image across the country. Later on, the film - In Whose Honor - was created on the subject. Her civil rights activism continued not only through such courses but through active art and exhibitions as well (Johns, 2000). She succeeded in her endeavors through creating of multimedia installations to evaluate the social suppositions or depictions of Indian people in pop culture as well as media. In addition, Teters, through her artwork, sought to express her personal and political views on America’s degradation of Indian people. Because of her effort to focus on bettering the Native indian image(Human needs) I would say that she uses human resource frame to have achieve her agender.
From selecting Charlene Teters, I have realized that civil rights movement is important in society. I have also noticed that, just as Teters, it is important to share knowledge of art with others as this opens the door for me and others. It also helps me to be respected. To me, teaching is a well-known and cherished cultural skill, especially among Natives. As such, I usually consider teaching more of a responsibility to impart knowledge and culture to others. Also, I regard art to be centered around achieving a transformation of perceptions of Native people.
