Class Assignment

Class Assignment Order Description Use the following vignette to answer questions 1-7 working in mental health services. You are doing an intake with a new client named Roberto. Roberto is a union carpenter with a wife and 3 young children. Up until recently he was the sole provider for his family. His wife was staying home to take care of the house and children. He recently injured his back on the job and is out worker’s compensation. His back does not seem to be getting better and he is unsure if he can return to manual labor. He and his wife used to have a very good relationship. Lately they have been having some difficulties. Roberto is more irritable than usual. He sleeps until about noon and rarely helps his wife with the children or housework. He spends much of the day on social media, occasionally looking for new jobs. His wife was patient at first, but has now grown quite angry. She regularly yells at him for being lazy and has even questioned why she has married him. She has tried to work on the relationship by suggesting they try going out on a date or spending time alone, but Roberto always say he’s not in the mood. His wife finally told him that he needed to seek some help or his behavior was going to ruin their relationship. She claims he is depressed. He does not think he is depressed, but is willing to try counseling to save his relationship. During the intake he is hesitant to answer your questions and generally seems disinterested in anything you have to say. What are some of his strengths? Formulate two specific questions you might ask to elicit more of his strengths. Name and briefly describe both a mezzo and a macro factor that might influence Roberto’s current situation? He says to you “You seem nice and all, but I just don’t think you can help me. My wife is just overly sensitive. I’m not behaving any differently than I used to behave before I lost my job. I don’t know why she suddenly has a problem with me.” How might you reflect this content back to him? Provide a specific example of a reflection. Roberto is Puerto Rican and you are wondering how that might influence his conceptualization of male and female roles and responsibilities. You don’t want to make any assumptions. How might you find out about how his culture may be impacting the current situation? Provide a specific example. Why might Roberto be considered an involuntary client? Name three strategies that could help your working relationship? How would you use the skill of partializing/prioritizing to engage and assess Roberto? Roberto has agreed to accept services and continue working with you. What would be a purpose of using a contract in your first clinical session with Robert? What might you include in the contract? Use the following vignette to answer questions 8-10 West Chester University has asked you to be part of a community assessment in the neighborhood surrounding the Philadelphia campus. They are interested in finding meaningful ways to give back to the local community. They have defined the neighborhood as a mile in each direction from campus. Community assessment can examine many factors. Discuss 3 factors you might examine and why. How would you ensure that you are not imposing your or WCU’s agenda on the community? How could you make the assessment strengths-based?
