Clinical techniques
What is the behavioral and or cognitive technique (s) you would use/teach/ suggest to your client. Please give an explanation/ reason behind your decision.
Case Example #1
J. is 15 years old and struggles with establishing and maintaining friendships. J. is afraid of saying or doing “the wrong thing” and “being ridiculed”. In addition, J. reports a constant fear of “failing” and describes such as feeling as “the worse thing that could happen to me.” Anytime that a teacher asks a question, J. wants to answer yet, sweaty palms, flushed face and thoughts of “I am going to make a mistake” take control. At these times, J. feels extremely frustrated and angry and the internal dialogue of “I am a failure, not good, stupid,” takes place. J. is a good student, her GPA is 3.8, yet the struggle with “perfection” significantly interfered with her ability to function in multiple settings ( school, home, work).
1- Explain the Cognitive Model using J’s situation. 2- Describe what technique you would use with J., how would you describe the technique to the client, what steps you would follow, questions you would ask (and why) and what would be the homework .
Case Example #2
Vic came in to treatment as he feels that his relationship with his wife is becoming more difficult. Vic reports that he feels that his wife is always “on my case’ and such feeling is hard “to get rid of”. Vic has a history of struggling with being “perfect” and taking care “of everything and everybody”. Last night, he was putting the dishes on the counter after dinner when his wife said “I took the car in to get the oil on Saturday.” His wife replied, “Well, you’ve been saying you would take care of it for two weeks, so I just took care of it myself!”. Vic became upset and yelled “Why don’t you just get another husband?” He grabbed his coat and left the house.
1- Describe what steps you plan to follow during the first and second session.2- Address at least 2 techniques that you would use in both sessions and explain the rationale. Describe what homework you would assign and why. (Use J. Beck readings and ppt).
