Mrs. Jones Observation – Developing a Coaching Conversation

Your Observation Notes: Ms. Jones is a second-year teacher, but is new to your campus. Upon arriving at Ms. Jones’ classroom, the teacher was standing at her desk at the back of the room gathering papers from the previous class. Students arrived to her classroom and entered the room. Three students sat at their desk, two went over to look out the window, four went to the bookcase to look for a book to check out from the classroom library, three gathered just inside the door and were huddled together, looking at something on a cell phone. Two boys grabbed the two bathroom passes and left the room. Other students arrived and took their seats – some read, some were talking and others just sat patiently at their desk. The bell rang and Ms. Jones says in a quiet, timid voice, “OK, everyone. Take your seats and let’s get started.”

The Situation: The second-year teacher, Ms. Jones, lacks effective and efficient routines and procedures. You have asked to meet with Ms. Jones and plan to conduct a coaching conversation with her based on your observation notes.

Assignment:
• Develop an opening statement that includes observable behaviors that support the observation notes for students entering the classroom. (I observed students (or not)……, I heard you say….., When you said….., etc.)
• State the desired goal for efficient and effective arrival procedures.
• Develop a plan for improvement based on what was observed. Recall the video clips from “Get Better Faster” and the strategies reinforced by the coach/supervisor.
• Use selected strategies from “Lemov 11 Research-Proven Practices” (Attached p.6-9) to coach Ms. Jones with the goal of improving her skills that will promote high standards and greater efficiency and effectiveness when her students enter the classroom.
• Consider sentence stems that follow the “6-Steps for Effective Feedback” (also attached) guide to develop your coaching conversation.
• State a one-week follow-up goal for the next observation.
