Comm 190 | Sprin" rel="nofollow">ing 2017 | Professor Irani Fin" rel="nofollow">inal Project: Reimagin" rel="nofollow">inin" rel="nofollow">ing Innovation for a More Public University (Team) This project in" rel="nofollow">invites you to imagin" rel="nofollow">ine how to make UCSD a more public, in" rel="nofollow">inclusive university by revisionin" rel="nofollow">ing and revisin" rel="nofollow">ing how it defin" rel="nofollow">ines and supports in" rel="nofollow">innovation. I hope you will build on the analyses your group and others in" rel="nofollow">in the class developed about in" rel="nofollow">innovation practices at UCSD. The fin" rel="nofollow">inal can build on the knowledge and energy of the midterm essay. The emphasis here is on developin" rel="nofollow">ing an alternative, well motivated concept. Form a team of 3 people. Ideally, you’ll fin" rel="nofollow">ind a team of people whose ideas and analyses you found in" rel="nofollow">inspirin" rel="nofollow">ing durin" rel="nofollow">ing the presentations of the midterm drafts or through class discussions. 1. Identify a part of the broader public that is not addressed, in" rel="nofollow">involved, or served by the current campus culture of in" rel="nofollow">innovation. Ideally, this is a set of people that at least one of you have a deep connection with, knowledge of, and accountability to. 2. With your group, develop an analysis of how this exclusion or margin" rel="nofollow">inalization happens. What defin" rel="nofollow">initions of in" rel="nofollow">innovation, social forces, or discourses create the problem? 3. Propose a space, event, or system that enacts a different vision and practice of in" rel="nofollow">innovation. Motivate the concept. Dream big. It does not have to be viable or sustain" rel="nofollow">inable in" rel="nofollow">in today’s terms. Discuss the proposal with reference to what you’ve learned through the class, through your research, and at least 3 core readin" rel="nofollow">ings. Visit office hours once as a group to discuss the work-in" rel="nofollow">inprogress before June 6. Reflect together, sometimes in" rel="nofollow">in writin" rel="nofollow">ing. I know it is hard to fin" rel="nofollow">ind meetin" rel="nofollow">ing time. I will create a group blog as a place to record your imagin" rel="nofollow">ination-and-reflection process and thin" rel="nofollow">ink out loud in" rel="nofollow">in writin" rel="nofollow">ing. You won't be graded for any wrong ideas here. The blog is a resource for you to free write or thin" rel="nofollow">ink "out loud” in" rel="nofollow">in writin" rel="nofollow">ing. You can free write to slow down your thought process, gain" rel="nofollow">in in" rel="nofollow">insight, and subject your own thoughts to critical reflection. Key dates: June 6 (last day of semin" rel="nofollow">inar): We will hear each group’s 5 min" rel="nofollow">inute presentations of the proposal. We’ll have enough time for discussion of the presentations and snacks. June 14 (fin" rel="nofollow">inal due on TurnItIn): For the fin" rel="nofollow">inal, write a 3000 word (give or take 5%) report clearly and compellin" rel="nofollow">ingly communicatin" rel="nofollow">ing your team’s analysis and concept. Imagin" rel="nofollow">ine deliverin" rel="nofollow">ing the document to the Dean or the Chancellor. Feel free to in" rel="nofollow">include graphics, diagrams, and color. Give it a snappy title that makes people want to read more. For me to assess your learnin" rel="nofollow">ing, in" rel="nofollow">include a sin" rel="nofollow">ingle page (not part of the word count) describin" rel="nofollow">ing how your group in" rel="nofollow">incorporated comments from the discussion day in" rel="nofollow">into revisin" rel="nofollow">ing and sharpenin" rel="nofollow">ing your ideas. After the due date, I will send out a peer review form each person will fill out in" rel="nofollow">individually to give me a sense of different people’s contributions to the group.
