What is a community?
When I think of community, I think of the people that surround me. I have been living in my community for twenty years and the individual in my neighborhood shares many interests. My children were raised in this community with their friends and many have gone to college together. Community is about sharing milestones and accomplishments, such as birthday and graduations. The neighbor’s in my community will care for my lawn and assist me with things that need to be fixed around my home. I am very well connected with my community by being part of the neighborhood watch or a good friend having a good time at a backyard barbeque. In my position, I work with many youths who have been incarcerated for violent crimes and many are victims of crimes. The children I work with are part of gangs and we make efforts to decrease the number of children in and gang or being initiated. In the community that I serve there are local citizens and former members of gangs who collaborate with families on how to prevent youth involvement. There is social intervention agencies and law enforcement agencies assist with the need to prevent violence in communities. We have gang prevention programs to promote positive youth development. Community comes in many forms and it is important on how we want to serve that community. According to Baker, 2003 states that community efforts prevent youth violence by collaboration, coalitions, prevention networks, task force, and community action networks.
