Compare or Contrast Ralph Waldo Emerson’s text, “Self-Reliance,” with Henry David Thoreau’s text, “Civil Disobedience.”

Length: 3 page minimum (This does not mean 2 ½ pages)

Tense: In referring to events that occur within the context of the work of literature, your essay should consistently use present tense verbs. Format: Your essay must be typed, double spaced, and follow MLA format. In addition to the essay, you must submit a Works Cited page. Avoid contractions, slang, clichés, etc. All essays will be scanned for plagiarism using the software, SafeAssign.

Important Reminders:

  1. Make sure that your thesis sentence is clearly stated as the LAST sentence of the FIRST paragraph.
  2. Do not quote Perkins – unless you are quoting biographical information or cross currents! Quote the actual author of the text.
  3. Avoid dropped quotes. Incorporate your quotes using a signal phrase, followed by an intext citation.
  4. Include the author’s last name and page number in the citation. Example: Signal phrase, “quote” (Emerson 345).
