Choose any novel, short story, or drama, and compare it to its film adaptation. In this 4-5 page essay, your purpose is to evaluate the film’s ability to adapt the story to the big screen. You will need to analyze the literary elements of the story, compare them to the film’s interpretation of those elements, and then evaluate the film’s effectiveness in portraying these elements, and the story as a whole, to its audience.
You are not required to choose a short story or drama we have read in class, but I must approve your chosen selections through the required research proposal (see sample in BB). This ensures that students do not select the same pairing.
For your research, you will need to use at least 2-3 secondary sources to analyze the story and film. You are welcome to use such Internet sources as IMDB.com to help you with the basics of the film, but do remember that it is not the only website with information and analyses on movies. Your library’s databases are an excellent place to find analyses on both your chosen story and film. Be sure to credit your sources.
In addition to the general Composition II Grading Rubric used with all of your essays, I will use the following criteria to assess this particular essay:
•Does the essay compare and evaluate in an organized fashion?
•How clear is your purpose/evaluation in writing this comparison? Is your purpose and position clearly stated in your thesis?
•How well does it analyze the different elements of the chosen story and film? Have you used the same categories for each subject so that you treat them fairly?
•Is your analysis and evaluation supported with evidence? Primary and secondary sources?
