Summary Despite quality of life (QOL) bein" rel="nofollow">ing a commonly-used concept, it is often
not clearly defin" rel="nofollow">ined or understood. This paper analyzes the concept of quality of life
usin" rel="nofollow">ing the framework developed by Walker and Avant [Strategies for Theory Construction
in" rel="nofollow">in Nursin" rel="nofollow">ing, 3rd Edition, Appleton & Lange, Norwalk, 1995]. A literature
review examin" rel="nofollow">ines the current usage of the concept and the concepts critical attributes.
In keepin" rel="nofollow">ing with Walker and Avants framework, cases will be described which
further defin" rel="nofollow">ine and illustrate the concept based on the presence or absence of the
critical attributes. In closin" rel="nofollow">ing, the concepts antecedents, consequences, and empirical
referents will be explored. The concept of QOL is particularly significant for
orthopaedic nurses. By examin" rel="nofollow">inin" rel="nofollow">ing QOL, nurses can become more cognizant of the
concept, patients perceptions of their own QOL, and ultimately the positive role
that nurses can play.
