Description
I'd like to change this DQ a bit…. What questions do you ask prior to considering what types (if any) of accommodations a child needs to support his/her behavior challenges in the school context? What do you need to know about the child? behavior?
An important question to ask before you consider behavioral accommodations would be to what extent does the behavior impede the student or other students learning? Prior to the introduction of accommodations staff members should keep data on the frequency and intensity of the behaviors. This is important as a first step in determining if a plan is necessary, designing a plan, and implementing the plan. After the implementation of the accommodations it is necessary to determine if the accommodations are working. Data will need to be kept in a variety of settings to determine the effectiveness of the accommodations. According to Parent Center Hub (2017), simple accommodations like moving distractible students from a window, changing the presentation, or the curriculum may be all that is necessary. For other students, it may be necessary to send students to another room for a break. Accommodations to be considered for students with behavioral concerns include: environmental, academic, instructional, or sensory (South Bend Community School Corporation, 2016). Determining what condition is contributing to the behavior is necessary in creating successful accommodations.
It is necessary to discuss the accommodations with other teachers and staff members discretely. Clearly explain what the accommodations are, and when and how they should be used. Let the teachers and staff members know that you are available for assistance and support. When everyone has the same understanding of the plan it will be more successful and beneficial to the student. An example, I can think of regarding my own students is high expectations following classroom routines and directions for all our students but when a specific student doesn’t comply one of the assistants coddles him. He has learned that the rules don’t apply to him.
