Part 1: Write a creative piece of your own modeled on one of the following texts we have discussed / will
discuss this semester:
(1) La Fontaine’s fables
(2) Candide
(3) Frankenstein
(4) “The Metamorphosis”
Your basic assignment is to extend or update the events of the literary work by incorporating references to
contemporary events. For example, if Voltaire were writing Candide today, where would Candide travel? And
what adventures would he have? Write a chapter (about 2 pages) detailing these adventures, keeping in mind
that Candide’s character should not change. You may include other characters from the story as needed. Try to
write in a tone similar to that of the original.
The second part of this assignment is the reflective piece.
Write a 2 page reflective discussion of your creative piece. In this writing, please address the following
questions:
• Considering your model for your creative piece: Why did you choose this text as your model?
• What challenges did you encounter in writing your creative piece?
• Beyond fulfilling the requirements of this assignment, did you have a purpose, or something you hoped to
accomplish with your creative piece?
• How did you go about deciding how you would update the original?
• In this process, did you learn anything about the text that served as your model?
• Where do you think your creative piece is particularly successful?
• Where are you less satisfied with your creative piece, or what are you unsure of?
• How much time did you devote to the planning and writing of your creative piece?
