Please submit three (3) intercultural incidents from the internet or clippings from magazines or newspapers (online images) which illustrate primary concepts discussed in class. The images you collect should provide you with an opportunity to analyze the situations described in terms of course concepts such as:
• cultural value differences
• misunderstandings which have occurred as a result of different world views
• stereotypes which have caused serious consequences
• conflicts which could be resolved through intercultural skills
• creative uses of cultural differences to enhance a particular context or situation
• communication style differences that have affected a situation
• ethnic identity development and cultural marginality
• patterns of acculturation or culture shock
• developmental stages of intercultural sensitivity
Goals of this assignment include demonstrating your ability to:
• understand the impact of culture in everyday contexts
• analyze intercultural situations using theory and concepts from the class
• develop resolutions and insights about intercultural issues
Instructions: create a 4 paragraph (6-8 sentences per paragraph) Word document that includes your findings in chronological order (each paragraph is dedicated to one incident-5% per incident AND your reflection paragraph is 10%). Each paragraph must present the topic you have chosen (e.g., culture shock) followed by a complete definition of the topic and your discussion of your chosen incident (in your own words). How is your image related to the topic we covered in class? Please do not retell what is in the article/image. Each article/image should have at least two references to the concepts covered in the course. You must include a link to the original source within your response. Your final REFLECTION paragraph will focus on the relevance of this assignment for your everyday life, and it will shed light on how this course has improved your intercultural communication skills. Please include your sources at the end of your paper. If it is a picture, please attach a picture to your paper.
Grading:
Paragraph 1-incident 1 (5%) to focus on concept 1
Paragraph 2-incident 2 (5%) to focus on concept 2
Paragraph 3-incident 3 (5%) to focus on concept 3
Paragraph 4-reflection (10%)
5% incident is 3% -analysis (course theory inclusion) and 2% - accurate language delivery
10% reflection is 8%- content analysis and 2%-accurate language delivery
Your efforts will be reviewed with attention to:
• the clarity, complexity, and sophistication of your analysis
• the selection of appropriately complex incidents
• your use of a wide range of concepts, e.g., each incident should ideally illustrate two or three ideas. There should be a wide range of concepts applied. For instance, all cases should not be focused on one concept.
