Data-Based Decision Making

We discussed the use of data for practical purposes, how to put data to work for school improvement, and ways to use data to differentiate professional development.

· Follow the steps below and compile your responses in a 4 page Word document (not including the title and references pages).

o Write an introduction and conclusion for your paper.

o Use APA format for the title page, references page, and in-text citations.

WHEN YOU DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO A SCHOOL: If you do not have access to new teachers for completion of the new-teacher needs assessment, a mock data sheet is attached. Instead of collecting and analyzing original data, you may organize and analyze the mock data and then complete the other parts of the assignment.

Step 1. Using the New-Teacher Needs Assessment Survey provided on the Template Tables document, survey teachers at a school (preferably your own) who have 0-5 years of experience. Make a copy of the survey for each teacher. You do not have to submit the individual surveys.

Step 2. Collect the surveys and record the data in the Needs Assessment Results chart.

Include the tally chart as a graphic in your paper. For each category, you should record each teacher’s responses. Remember the teachers were to use 1 for the area of their greatest need, so the lowest total will indicate the greatest area of need.

Step 3. Summarize the data and select three professional development topics for the new teachers. Compose a 5-paragraph rationale for your choice of topics. Include an introduction, a paragraph for each topic, and a conclusion.
