Describe an organization related to human services
Part 1:
Describe in detail the structure of an organization of your choice. Include:
• Background description and history of the organization
• Mission statement,
• Personnel
• Structure
• Purpose of the organization
• Delivery of Services
• Supervisory/management practices and attitudes
• Composition of the workforce
Part II:
Interview at least one supervisor/manager from the organization described in Part
I. Include such questions (not limited to) as:
• How did you become a supervisor/manager, for example, were you
promoted from a non-supervisory/managerial position, or did you come to it
directly from your academic preparation, or in what way?
• What do you see as the primary satisfactions/rewards that are associated
with being a supervisor or manager?
• What do you see as the downside (negative aspects) of being a supervisor
or manager?
• What do you consider to be the primary differences between being a
supervisor/manager as compared to being an employee/subordinate?
• What is your leadership style?
• How do you ensure effective communication within your organization?
• How do you deal with such issues as cultural differences and sexual
harassment?
• What advice do you give to someone who is aspiring to be a supervisor/
manager?
Write a summary of the interview for your paper. Include quotes as appropriate.
Compare the responses you receive in your interview(s) with some of the
concepts presented in the course (theories of management, diversity, managerial
opportunities for women, etc).
Part III
Using concepts that you have learned from the course, give your personal
reflections on:
• The organization that you have described in Part I
• What you learned from this exercise
• Whether your aspirations to become a supervisor/manager are greater or
lesser than before
• What further academic/skills training you need in order to pursue a career in
supervision/management
As appropriate, a bibliography should be included, and the writing style should
meet third-level-education standards.
