Describe the different methods used to collect fingerprint evidence from hard/non-absorbent surfaces and soft/porous surfaces.
Sample Solution
Hard/Non-Absorbent Surfaces:
- Vacuum Method – This method involves using a vacuum to collect trace evidence and fingerprints from hard surfaces like glass or metal. A piece of adhesive tape is applied to the area and then the vacuum is used to draw up any dust, dirt, fibers, and particles on the surface. The evidence collected can be examined under a microscope for further examination.
- Magnetic Powder Method – Magnetic powder is dusted onto the surface where it adheres to any latent prints that may have been left behind. After applying a magnetic field, the powder will cling only to those areas with prints thus making them visible for comparison and collection.
