DNA evidence in identify victims

In cases of disasters, DNA evidence is sometimes required in order to identify victims. If a victim doesn’t have a DNA profile on file, identity must be reconstructed by comparing the victim’s DNA profile to relatives’. These situations illustrate that a DNA profile database has the potential to be useful in cases in which DNA-based identification is required. However, such a database is controversial.

For this discussion, post an original thread (>250 words) with a Group Learning Link to an article discussing a case where DNA profiling or fingerprinting was used or in which building of a DNA profile database is discussed. Then, briefly summarize your article and answer the following:

  1. What arguments can you make for and against “banking” people’s DNA profiles in a database?
  2. If such a database existed, what restrictions would you place on it?
After posting an original thread, post at least three thoughtful and constructive replies (>150 words) to different classmates.
