Introduction of Problem
• Using no more than one (1) sentence, state the topic or problem selected for the DNP project plan. Use the “P” in PICO as a guide.
• Among adult patients ages 18-45 with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in a behavioral health clinic in the Southeast 12.5% (n= 25) continue with unrelieved depressive symptoms.
Background of Project Need
• Using no more than one (1) sentence, state why this topic or problem is clinically significant to address in the identified clinical area. It is important to build a case for the need for the project. Convince the reader that the identified topic or problem is worth exploring and is significant.
• Studies have shown that adult patients with MDD have experienced unrelieved depressive symptoms at a rate of 30% coupled with functional impairment and suicide ideation by the end of treatment.
Project Purpose Statement
• Describe the purpose of the project. Using no more than one (1) sentence, explain why this issue is important to nursing practice (within the realm of the student’s specialty focus and advanced nursing role specialization).
• The purpose of this project is to decrease depressive symptoms among adult patients ages 18-45 with MDD by assessing with the Patient Health Questionnair-9 (PHQ-9) along with daily individualized Mindfulness‐based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) meditation, journaling, and breathing techniques.
Project Aim and Objectives
• State one (1) overarching aim that identifies the expected final outcome of the project.
• The overarching aim is to decrease depressive symptoms among patients ages 18 to 45 with MDD in an adult behavioral health clinic in the Southeast region.
• List three (3) objectives (specific goals) that support the overarching aim. SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely) objectives should be evident. Are the objectives appropriate to meet the identified need and realistic to accomplish within the project’s short implementation phase?
• All adult patients seen by the psychiatry team will be assessed for depressive symptoms using the PHQ- 9 over 12 weeks.
• All participants will engage in daily mindfulness techniques at least 80% of the time over the course of the project.
• All participants will show a reduction of at least 3 points on the PHQ-9 by the end of the project.
