DRUG DILEMMAS
In this essay, you will be applying a Stakeholder Analysis to a specific ethical situation or case confronting a business. For this, you will need to find a case
study that you will analyze. Your case study should involve a case where a business had to make a decision that involved competing stakeholder interests.
You can use a historical situation or a contemporary situation. You can use a case study from the textbook, or you can find a contemporary example
elsewhere. It is important that you spend some time finding a good case study to use that involves a decent amount of details. A case study that is weak on
details, lacks conflict in stakeholder interests, or has a very clear and easy answer will hurt your mark.
Your essay should address the following:
• Ethical Issues: What are the ethical issues raised in this case? Explain.
• Stakeholder Identification: Who are the morally relevant stakeholders in this case? And what are their specific interests?
• Courses of Action: What courses of action or potential alternatives are available for the business? How would these affect the interests of
stakeholders?
• Choice of Action: Which action should you take, given the stakeholder interests? Why? What principle or moral standard or arguments morally
support this choice?
• Objection: You should finish by considering and responding to an objection to your argument for the choice of action you advocate.
This essay is an argumentative essay. You will be arguing for a specific thesis – what you believe the company morally should do – and defending your thesis
with reasons. Your essay should open with an introduction that does two things. First, it should state your thesis clearly and concisely. Second, your
introduction should provide a ‘road map’ that briefly outlines the structure of your essay.
With this, about half of your essay should be focused on your argument for the Choice of Action and considering and responding to an objection.

Essay Outline
Two weeks prior to the due date for the essay, you will turn in an Essay Outline at the start of class. The purpose of the outline is to make sure you have
selected a case study that will work for the essay, that your argument is on track, and that you consider a relevant objection.
Your essay outline should be 1-1.5 pages, double spaced and should include the following:
Summary of the Case Study
• You should give a two paragraph summary of the case study that you will consider. This summary should focus on the most relevant details,
specifically the decision the business is considering and the conflicting stakeholder interests.
• You should include the source(s) where you found the information on your case study.
Summary of Argument
• Your outline should include a one to two paragraph summary of what position you will defend and the argument you will make. What principle,
moral standard, or moral argument will you appeal to and defend to argue for this choice?
Objection
• Finally, you should include a paragraph on the objection you will consider and a brief outline on how you plan to respond.
