E-learning for English Language Teaching

In this essay you should critically reflect upon one of the below in relation to language learning: • An e-learning theoretical approach (e.g. connectivism, Data Driven Learning) • Online teaching/learning materials (e.g. open e-learning materials, independent learning materials) • A tool (e.g. wikis, blogs) Your argument should be based on current literature on this particular issue, mainly from peer-reviewed journals and relevant academic books. It should include a discussion of the specific theoretical assumptions that underpin it and a discussion of the viability and pedagogic possibilities as well as its limitations. If possible, refer to a specific institutional and cultural context with which you are familiar. This assignment offers you the chance to focus on one particular aspect of e-learning from a more theoretical and contextual perspective. Note that you are not asked to write a general overview of the pros and cons of an approach, material or tool. Your assignment will be assessed according to the following criteria: 1 Use of relevant literature: you are expected to sample and select from a range of key sources on the topic of your choice. We would expect you to draw on at least 7-8 journal articles and/or book chapters. 2 Quality of referencing: you should cite and quote your sources appropriately in the body of your text, and provide a properly formatted bibliography at the end. 3 Coherence of structure: Organise your material in a way that will be easily followed by your readers. In order to do this, we recommend that you use headings and subheadings. 4 Grasp of key concepts, issues: you should demonstrate that you have understood and are able to explain the concepts and issues relating to the topic on which you are writing. 5 Quality of description and analysis: you should both describe and analyse the issues and/or debates relating to your topic. 6 Clarity and development of argument: you should decide on your own position in relation to the topic you are discussing, and develop an argument that reflects it. 7 Evidence of independent and critical thought: you should explore and explain the orientations of your sources, and also demonstrate an ability to think independently about them and, if relevant, to criticise them. 8 Presentation: your work should be well presented with assignment title, page numbers, bibliography etc. all present, and carefully checked for typos.
