Early Childhood Education and Care

Historically there has been ineffective responses from the Australian government to the difficulties faced by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. In remote areas of Australia there is a lack of infrastructure.

Difficult social environments due to historical events, community, family and individual issues are factors that can have an effect on service delivery to the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.

☐Satisfactory ☐ Not satisfactory
Feedback to student:
Cultural bias leads to negative stereotyping and discrimination. It is not always easy for childcare workers to understand how our own culture can influence how we think, feel and behave. Many people from different cultural backgrounds work together in childcare services.

Question 5
In what way can a service ensure that they foster an understanding of cultural safety across the service?

☐Satisfactory ☐ Not satisfactory
Feedback to student:
There is not a ‘right time’ in Aboriginal and Torres Strait island culture to feed a child or for a child to sleep. These two child’s needs are left completely under the decision of the child. In contrast to the mainstream practice of establishing routines for feeding, sleeping and activities, Australian indigenous cultures believe that it is the child that knows when he/she is hungry or sleepy and so adults have to respect and satisfy these judgements.

Scenario
An Aboriginal child (Killara) has started at the service. It is her first day and the child shows no signs of hunger at morning tea time and is reluctant to come and sit with the group to share morning tea. You ask if you should save some Morning Tea for Killara. Your room leader tells you that Killara can now wait until lunch time to eat. You follow your room leader’s instruction.

Use the reflective cycle (given below) to examine your own social and cultural bias towards another culture in your work practice by completing the table below based on the following scenario. You must take into consideration the information given in the scenario.
