I plan to take the following actions to minimize or alleviate moral distress caused by ethical dilemmas:

• Educate myself about ethical decision-making and legal issues in healthcare. I will do this by reading articles, attending workshops, and talking to other nursing leaders.
• Create a supportive environment for my colleagues. I will create an environment where my colleagues feel comfortable discussing ethical dilemmas and where they feel supported in making difficult decisions.
• Seek help when needed. If I am faced with an ethical dilemma that I cannot resolve on my own, I will seek help from a trusted colleague, a legal advisor, or an ethics committee.

The values that support my actions include:

• Respect for patient autonomy. I believe that patients have the right to make their own decisions about their care.
• Beneficence. I believe that I have a duty to do good for my patients.
• Non-maleficence. I believe that I have a duty to avoid doing harm to my patients.
• Justice. I believe that I have a duty to treat all patients fairly.
