Ethical Dilemma: You and a colleague are social workers assigned by your agency to work with a community group. Your values and those of the group have been very similar regarding every issue so far. At this evening’s meeting however, a group member announced that the housing authority has decided to rent to the local mental health department to establish a group home. The entire group agreed to oppose this, and your colleague agrees with them, telling the group so in the last meeting. You know there is a great need for a group home and your agency's focus has historically been in strong support of group homes for the mentally ill. Should you make your opinion known? To whom do you owe loyalty? The agency? The group? Yourself? The neighborhood? Your colleague? The mentally ill who need the residence? Society? How will you balance your values with those of the group and your colleague? Apply your ethical decision-making framework and post your logic to the discussion board.
