European Foreign Policy Order Description Overview: Durin" rel="nofollow">ing the second half of this course, we unpacked the four components of European foreign policy (i.e., Common Foreign and Security Policy [CFSP], Common Security and Defense Policy [CSDP], External Action, and the External Effects of Internal Policies), and how each component is applied to ability to shape foreign relations in" rel="nofollow">in four critical regions (e.g., Balkans and Turkey, Russia and the Eastern Neighborhood, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, and the United States). Examin" rel="nofollow">inin" rel="nofollow">ing these relationships will form the basis of your fin" rel="nofollow">inal examin" rel="nofollow">ination. Choose ONE of the followin" rel="nofollow">ing prompts: Neighborhood Prompt: Scholars differ on the extent to which the EU “actually has a foreign policy”. While some highlight the positive effects that the EU has on in" rel="nofollow">international politics when it is united, others note the lack of consistency as evidence that the EU lacks the willin" rel="nofollow">ingness and/or ability to conduct a “real foreign policy”. Evaluatin" rel="nofollow">ing the consistency of EU foreign policy in" rel="nofollow">in ONE of the followin" rel="nofollow">ing regions (Balkans and Turkey, Russia and the Eastern Neighborhood, or the Mediterranean and the Middle East), would you argue that the European Union “has a real foreign policy” in" rel="nofollow">in your chosen region? Why? Why not? Requirements: To address this question, your paper should use course materials to: 1. Identify the European Union’s policy goals in" rel="nofollow">in your selected region. 2. Briefly detail how the four components of EU foreign policy play out in" rel="nofollow">in your region. 3. Defin" rel="nofollow">ine consistency (e.g., horizontal, vertical, in" rel="nofollow">institutional, in" rel="nofollow">interstate) 4. Use the existence (or absence) of consistency in" rel="nofollow">in your selected region to advance your argument as to whether not the European Union “actually has a real foreign policy”. Transatlantic Prompt: For some analysts, the formation of the Sin" rel="nofollow">ingle European Market (SEM) and European Monetary Union (EMU) heralds “the end of American supremacy” and has in" rel="nofollow">injected competition in" rel="nofollow">into US/EU relations. Others do not go so far as to suggest the EU will displace the US, but contend that cultural differences in" rel="nofollow">in the way the US and the EU view threat in" rel="nofollow">indicate that “the United States is from Mars and Europe is from Venus” and that these differences make main" rel="nofollow">intain" rel="nofollow">inin" rel="nofollow">ing the transatlantic relationship more difficult. Is the “US is from Mars and the EU is from Venus”? What do differences in" rel="nofollow">in world view between the US and the EU suggest, if anythin" rel="nofollow">ing, for the future of the transatlantic relationship? Requirements: To address this question your paper should use course materials to: 1)Explain" rel="nofollow">in what is meant by the phrase "the US is from Mars and the EU is from Venus” 2) Highlight the similarities/differences shapin" rel="nofollow">ing the way the US and EU view the world. 3) Do you agree with the I dea that the "US is from Mars and the EU is from Venus”? 4) Comment on the future of the transatlantic relationship (i.e. Can the transatlantic relationship be saved? Why or why not?). The essay should be 5-7 pages in" rel="nofollow">in length, use 12 poin" rel="nofollow">int font and standard margin" rel="nofollow">ins, and contain" rel="nofollow">in a bibliography. There is a handout on the course website “Writin" rel="nofollow">ing a Good Social Science Paper” which details the appropriate format for this assignment. Papers which lack an identifiable thesis statement within" rel="nofollow">in the in" rel="nofollow">introduction, fail to in" rel="nofollow">integrate course readin" rel="nofollow">ings effectively and/or rely on lecture slides will be penalized. Please keep in" rel="nofollow">in min" rel="nofollow">ind that while you can use current events material to supplement your discussion of course readin" rel="nofollow">ings, you DO NOT need outside materials for this assignment.
