As a reader, you, should be able to draw conclusions based on what the character says to other characters (interactions/speech/dialogue), the actions of the character (what he/she does OR does notd) and the thoughts of the character (author gives you insight into the character's thoughts = true feelings). Remember that characters are the author's creation, so he/she has an agenda to persuade you to like or dislike certain characters, however she/he is not going to announce their intentions: instead the author is going to make you arrive at that conclusion by the characters actions, dialogue, and thoughts.
