Expressions in the micro expression training

Do people who took the micro expression training detect lies better than those who are naturally talented in reading micro expressions?
the training being referred to is F.A.C.E. Training by Dr. Paul Ekman

  1. Final Paper (30%)

The final paper assignment is designed to help you to develop further your analytical skills and to provide opportunity to acquire a more detailed knowledge of a very specific research area. It should parallel a Journal of Personality and Social Psychology or Journal or Applied Psychology article in form and style (also see the APA publication manual), with the exception that there will be no results and discussion sections because you will not collect data. The paper should include the following sections: title page, abstract, introduction, method, references and appendix. Note that JPSP articles often consist of a series of two or three experiments, reflecting a systematic approach to research and often developing a process understanding of the phenomenon of interest. Your paper can model such a multiple-study article.

Below you can find information about how to write this paper. We will further discuss how to write APA style papers in class. Each student is responsible to get an approval on the final paper topic from the instructor. Write a brief paragraph that describes your main idea for the final paper, including the independent and dependent variables and your research questions, and show it to me to get my feedback and approval. Final papers are due
April 30th, at 5 pm on moodle. Late submission penalty will apply if needed.

How to write the final paper

The final paper assignment is designed to help you to develop further your analytical skills and to provide opportunity to acquire a more detailed knowledge of a very specific research area. It should parallel a scientific journal article in form and style (also see the APA publication manual), except that you will not collect data, and will not write results and discussion sections.

The idea of this paper should focus on some “why” questions. You must always translate your ideas into a research plan, describing in a general way the procedure for how you would go about exploring the issues you raise. Details about number or type of subjects, statistical procedures, etc., ordinarily are not important for this paper.

THE PAPER SHOULD CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS:

• TITLE PAGE

Including appropriate title, short title, page number, running head, your name, date, and your university.

• ABSTRACT

Typically between 100-150 words. The abstract should inform the reader as to the nature of the topic area, the purpose, the hypothesis (es), the variables, the methodology, the type of participants tested, the results found, and the principal conclusions and implications.

• INTRODUCTION

Before writing the paper, consider

  • What is the point of this paper?
  • How does the theory relate to the problem under investigation?
  • What are the theoretical implications of the paper? (This is especially important because when you write this paper, you must refer to a theory that is under cover.)
  1. The body of the paper should open with an introduction that presents the specific problem, question or critique that you want to address. Introduce the idea, the problem or the question that is addressed in the paper. In the first page or two, describe the point (or purpose) of the study, explain why the topic is important, summarize the relevant argument. This initial section should give the reader a firm sense of what is the purpose and the topic of the paper and why that specific topic was chosen.
  2. Develop a background about a related theory (or theories), and include a brief (3-5 pages) literature review (but not an exhaustive historical review). This literature review should be the foundation and provide a support for a new idea or insight that you contribute. The focus of a literature review should be to summarize the key theories and findings in the literature, and synthesize the arguments and ideas of others. You can point out overall trends in what has been published about your research idea, or conflicts in theory, methodology, evidence, and conclusions, or gaps in research, or a single problem or new perspective of immediate interest. You can summarize 1-2 individual studies or articles with as much or as little detail as each merits according to its comparative importance in the literature.
Include at least 10 core references in the introduction section. These references can be selected from your assigned readings, or other sources.
  3. State your purpose and rationale and link them to the theory (or theories) presented. After you have introduced the problem, you are in a position to tell what your interesting research idea is. Develop a rationale for each proposition or idea. Why did you choose to write this paper on this specific issue?
  4. Define your independent and dependent variables, and present your hypotheses clearly.

In sum

In this section, topic of research should be introduced. It gives the reader a background in the area based on the previous literature. It includes operational definition of variables, the purpose(s), and the specific hypothesis (es) under investigation.

• METHOD

Method section should include a general information about how you conduct the study (participants, design, procedure, and material). Describe in your paper all the details necessary for complete replication of your methods. It is divided into 3 sections:

In the Participants section, describe your population (age, sex, education or other demographics), and the number of subjects tested (how many of each gender?). Indicate whether or not participation was voluntary and describe the selection procedure briefly (random or convenience sample etc.). Were data from some subjects eliminated and if so, why?

What is your design?

Materials section is optional. Briefly describe any materials, or apparatus used in the study.

In the Procedure section, describe how the study was conducted. How, when and where? Describe in your paper all the details necessary for complete replication of your methods.
