GOAL: To develop skills in critically assessing the primary literature and verbally presenting findings of clinical investigations published in medicine and pharmacy literature.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Complete the assignment using the journal club template. A completed finalized copy should be distributed at the time of your presentation to your facilitator (only one copy is needed for the facilitator). Your typewritten handout must be no longer than 2 pages front and back (maximum is 4 pages in total). Please view the grading rubric so you know how you will be graded.
TIPS • Do not wait until the last minute to complete this assignment. • Review Journal Club 101 lecture prior to completing this assignment - This lecture serves as a great overview for how to complete a journal club and expectations. • Do not copy/paste tables or information from your article into the journal club template!! You will lose points if you do so. • I recommend designating a leader to keep the group on track to complete the assignment on time. • Understand the disease state and treatment strategies related to your journal club topic. For example, if you are giving a journal club on the LEADER trial (Liraglutide and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Type 2 Diabetes), understanding treatment of type 2 diabetes and place in therapy of liraglutide and other GLP-1 agonists is going to be important. • Understand what trials led the investigators to your assigned article (i.e., Why was this trial completed in the first place?) and how these results apply to practice (i.e., Was there a change in guidelines? Why or why not? Do you agree or disagree if changes were or were not made?)
