A residential building (a motel) is to be constructed on the land shown in blue in figure 1. A plan view of
the basement floor with column numbering is shown in figure 2. The building is 4 floors high (including
the ground floor). Structural analysis showed that column loads are as shown in table 1. A one floor
basement is to be constructed. Water level is 7.1 m from the surface. Below the basement the foundation
will be buried. Two types are considered. The first one, Shallow spread footings (see figure 3) with
continuous foundations along axes A and F. the footing type under each column is shown in table 1.
1) Calculate the factor of safety against bearing capacity and calculate settlement for each column
footing.
2) Calculate the factor of safety against overturning, sliding and bearing capacity failure of wall A1-A4 and
wall F1-F4. 3) Calculate the settlement of the wall footing. Use If = 1 for wall footing. 4) Calculate the
maximum differential settlement.
