In reforming a communist system, maintaining an authoritarian system will result in more effective and stable government than democratic political reform. My position is that it does not, and the two case studies to support this position is Poland (positive transition) and Former Yugoslavia/Serbia (negative transition).
Highlight how the Solidarity Worker’s Union (Poland) was a better instigator of political change from communism to democracy than an authoritative leader, like Slobodan Milošević (Yugoslavia/Serbia) which resulted in Yugoslavia collapsing and moving into civil war and eventual breakup into independent states. Define authoritarianism, communist vs. democratic forms of government, and list a few countries that fall under these categories. End the paper by highlighting that Poland is now slipping back into an ‘authoritarian-democratic system’.
