Learning Goals:
In this assignment, students will:
- generate, gather, and organize ideas and information to write for an intended purpose and audience (W.1);
- draft and revise their writing, using a variety of literary, informational, and graphic forms and stylistic elements appropriate for the purpose and audience (W.2);
- use editing, proofreading, and publishing skills and strategies, and knowledge of language conventions, to correct errors, refine expression, and present their work

- reflect on and identify their strengths as writers, areas for improvement, and the strategies they found most helpful at different stages in the writing process

Success Criteria:
Students will succeed in this assignment by:
- demonstrating knowledge of the different characteristics of a feature magazine article;
- showing the ability to apply these characteristics effectively in writing an article of their own;
- exhibiting planning skills in completing research from secondary sources, making notes from that research and creating an outline for their article;
- displaying insightful creative thinking skills in selecting a voice for their article and creating a narrative in the context of the colonization of Africa;
- using paragraphs to effectively structure their article using a “seduction, development, payoff” model, and careful proofreading to avoid errors in Canadian English
conventions.
Description:
In this assignment, students will write a feature magazine article written in the time period of the colonization of Africa, similar to the context of Heart of
Darkness. The article will be written for a Western European audience and will expose the conditions faced by the native Africans at the hands of their oppressors.
The purpose of the article is to persuade the audience to pressure the political and corporate classes for reform.
Students will research the historical context of the colonization of Africa.
Next, students will prepare an outline for their article. We will use the “Seduction, Development, Payoff” model described in class to create a distinct authorial
voice and narrative structure.
