First Steps: Choose one and only one story from the following list for your essay: Stephen Crane's "The Open
Boat," Ernest Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants," or Charlotte Perkins Gilman "The Yellow Wallpaper."
There are practice Close Reading Exercises for each of those stories to help you in your reading
comprehension and analysis. They are worth no points and you do not have to do them, but they are there if
you want. The other two stories you do not have to read.
Essay Prompt: Using the language and analytic tools of plot, story, narration, point-of-view, character, and
the setting, compose a 1000 word essay that makes a claim about the theme(s) of your chosen story and supports
that claim with textual evidence (quotations, paraphrase, and citations).
Outside of the provided Norton resources, do not consult the internet or bring in other sources, cited or
otherwise, besides the story as it appears in our textbook. Include proper MLA intertextual citations and include
a Works Cited. A detailed grading rubric is attached (see the little button with three dots on top of each other in
the upper right)
