Must write original Haiku about neurodegenerative diseases You finally get the chance to write poetry. Choose neurodegenerative disease (e.g. a specific disease or general issue related to neurodegeneration) as a focus for your poem. Write a traditional haiku depicting any aspect we have discussed related to your chosen topic. Because you only have 17 syllables with which to work, I recommend focusing on a single topic, process, or mechanism. The level of analysis you address is open to you - you can be quite reductionistic, depicting the molecular biology, or holistic, depicting intrapersonal or interpersonal aspects. Remember that one goal of haiku is to capture nature in its essence. Provide an explication or explanation of your poem. In 1-2 pages (typed, double-spaced) describe the underlying meanings you have portrayed using supporting information from class discussions and readings. Remember to cite evidence from course materials. Points will be assigned based on your explanation, not on the quality of your poetry; however, as you know, I do love a good poem . Do have fun with the poem but don’t get lost in the poetry process if you find it difficult. The main objective is to distill information down to key parts or “nuggets” and to describe them in the few words allowed by the haiku form. Some may argue that explication detracts from the overall karma of a haiku, but I’d like to know the deeper meanings of your poem. And, as you also know one primary objective of the course is for you to gain experience using scientific evidence to support your ideas.
