If the Ford government is successful and Canadian health care becomes privatized, middle, working, and lower-class individuals will be directly impacted. While upper-class individuals will benefit. When discussing these impacts, they can be broken down in relation to the social determinants of health (SDOH). Specifically, income; employment and working conditions; and access to health services. Income and access to health services go hand in hand when discussing privatization and funding cuts. Since less funding to publicly funded services will result in fewer resources and longer wait times. Whereas, privatized services will result in preferential and timely care for those who are able to afford the associated costs. Evidently, cuts and privatization will not only affect citizens receiving services, but also health care providers delivering these services. This impact on workers can be directly related to employment and working conditions. Privatization and funding cuts mean fewer jobs, resources, and increased workload for health care workers employed by the public sector. So, what does this mean for community health nurses (CHN)? Well, funding cuts will likely result in fewer jobs for CHNs in the public sector. Thus, the remaining nurses will have to be stronger than ever in the delivery of health prevention, promotion, and maintenance education and services. With the hope that Canadian citizens in their care will require less frequent access to health care and less acute care services, services which will surely be impacted.
