The purpose of this optional assignment is to give you more practice in analyzing the formal elements of media. For better results, I recommend doing this assignment after you've read my article about Madame Lalaurie.
Questions:
1) Notice the number of extreme close-up shots used in this scene, where the face of Madame Lalaurie (Kathy Bates) and others fill the camera. How do these shots make you feel? Why is that important for the larger story that the scene is telling?
2) Throughout this scene, the camera is tilted to present some shots at extreme angles. Why do you think they decided to film this way? What effect does it have and how does that add to the story? Use at least one example of an extreme angle.
3) Lalaurie's cruel nature is revealed early on through the story and dialogue. How does Kathy Bates' acting contribute to this? What does she do with her face and body to make Lalaurie's evil more obvious and terrifying?
