The follow
ing post has two assignments namely;
1.Freud's Uncanny
In two of the narratives we have studied this term, the central figures (Georg
in Kafka’s
“Judgment” and Franzis
in Wiene’s 'The Cab
inet of Dr- Caligari") suffer a great reversal
near the end of their stories: suddenly, the world is not at all the way they supposed it
was. We talked about this
in terms of family dysfunction (“The Judgment”) and
in the
sense of cultural betrayal (Caligari), but both stories might have more specific common
ground
in an “uncann
iness” that is
in accordance with Freud’s def
inition and
discussion
in the essay posted on Blackboard. lf these works are,
indeed, uncanny,
how might their uncann
iness strike you as the reader/viewer? What might this
uncann
iness cause you to question or challenge, and how might the artists’ choice to
surprise you with the reversal create a mean
ing that is common to both stories?
Obviously, the cluster of questions above could have a number of answers, but what is
yours?
