Freud's Uncanny

The following post has two assignments namely;

1.Freud's Uncanny

In two of the narratives we have studied this term, the central figures (Georg in Kafka’s “Judgment” and Franzis in Wiene’s 'The Cabinet of Dr- Caligari") suffer a great reversal near the end of their stories: suddenly, the world is not at all the way they supposed it was. We talked about this in terms of family dysfunction (“The Judgment”) and in the sense of cultural betrayal (Caligari), but both stories might have more specific common ground in an “uncanniness” that is in accordance with Freud’s definition and discussion in the essay posted on Blackboard. lf these works are, indeed, uncanny, how might their uncanniness strike you as the reader/viewer? What might this uncanniness cause you to question or challenge, and how might the artists’ choice to surprise you with the reversal create a meaning that is common to both stories? Obviously, the cluster of questions above could have a number of answers, but what is yours?
