Entry #2: The Economy

• Examine trends in FDI and trade
This project provides the opportunity to “ground” in a specific place the concepts we are exploring in the interrelated themes of our course this semester – demographic, social, economic, and political globalization and development. You have selected a country and, in the course of the semester, will construct an analytical profile of that country with reference to the incidence of several key variables. As explained in the following sections, you should research the incidence and/or status of particular variables and analyze the implications of your findings for your country. This involves assessing the status of your country relative to the region to which it pertains as well as the global system. These assignments will aid in both giving a “sense of place” to course themes and will expose you to various research resources that are helpful in a wide variety of coursework. The use of maps and other visual aids (such as graphs, pie charts, tables, etc.) is expected in your each of the entries for this project.
Your Project will have FOUR components (units 2,3,4 and 5), corresponding to issues studied in the major units of our course, including the overarching theme of globalization and uneven development. Although your research and analysis should be based on primary data, you may consult background materials (i.e., secondary sources) in order to appreciate the context of those data. The final project should portray effectively the status of your country within a global context as well as the context of daily life for the average citizen in that country. The format of this project allows you to convey a great deal of pertinent information in a way that can have a high-impact on those who encounter it. It allows your audience to become acquainted, relatively quickly and easily, with your topic and the “story” you wish to tell about that country.
Note that you must cite all sources of your data (both primary and secondary). Please use footnotes (numbered consecutively in each assignment). At the end of the project, create a complete bibliography following the Chicago style of referencing.
Further note that while you are encouraged to make some of your own visuals, you are not required to make each one. However, you should look to use (and cite) images you find in credible sources.
Project Guidelines
• The project will have a total of 4 entries.
• Each entry must begin on its own page.
• Each entry is limited to 600-800 words (excluding visuals). They should be spaced 1.5 and use Times 12 pt font.
• Each entry should include at least one visual (e.g., map, graph, chart, table). The source of each visual should be cited directly underneath the visual (not in a footnote). Visuals without clear citations are unacceptable. Blurry visuals are not worth including.
• For each entry your written analysis must include at least 1-2 non-website sources (e.g., books, journal articles, chapters in edited volumes, newspaper articles).
• Overall, the project should be informed by a balance of scholarly resources, very strong non-academic sources, and non-academic sources.
• Connect your country to the themes of the course and, when appropriate, course readings.
• Include a scalar context (for example, how is your country doing with regard to fertility compared to countries in its region? The Global South? The Global North?
• Vocabulary and quality of writing counts.
