Gender and Citizen Participation

Description

Read Schlozman, et al. — Gender and Citizen Participation: Is there a Different Voice. American Journal of
Political Science 39, 2 (1995), 267-293 (one of the readings required for Module 3), and answer the following questions. This is NOT an essay assignment. You do not need to organize your answers into an essay. Answer the following questions one by one.

  1. What is the general research question? What justifications did the authors offer for undertaking the project? Did you find their reasons convincing? Do not just answer “yes” or “no”. Write why you think the reasons were/were not convincing.
  2. Was the review of earlier research focused and comparative? Are the authors critical of previous studies? Do not just answer “yes” or “no”. Explain.
  3. What are the hypotheses the article intends to test? There are three specific hypotheses.
  4. Are the hypotheses consistent with the findings of earlier studies? Can the hypotheses be easily traced to explanations derived from broader theories? Which hypotheses are most strongly suggested by earlier research? Are the hypotheses stated clearly? Do not just answer “yes” or “no”. Explain.
  5. What are the variables in each hypothesis? What are the dependent and independent variables in each hypothesis? How is each variable measured?
  6. What method is used to test the hypotheses? Is the process of data collection adequately described? Do not just answer “yes” or “no”. Explain.
  7. What are the findings with regard to each hypothesis? Do statistical results support each hypothesis? Do not just answer “yes” or “no”. Explain.
  8. The authors repeat their tests of hypotheses to take into account race/ethnicity and social status. Do you think that there are other factors that should have been examined to see if they influence the relationship between gender and participation? What other factors?
  9. Did the authors provide adequate tests of their hypotheses, or is more research necessary? Are the conclusions discussed by the authors consistent with their findings to earlier research?
  10. Do you have any other comments (criticisms of the theory, methods used, and comparisons with the findings of other researchers…)?
