Order Description
Genre/Form Transformation? Background: Essay one focused on your personal history and goals as they relate to your field, introduced you to topical information being discussed and your “Discourse Community’s” communicative and systematic practices. For this essay, you will need to use the information you have gathered from your field, your rhetorical analysis skills, and some creative thinking to participate in a discussion of your fields ideas via a nonconventional form or genre. i.e. It is very likely that you will need to break some of your discourse community’s communicative “rules.”
Assignment: Use summary, quotation, paraphrase, and creative techniques to “transform” one of the scholarly articles you’ve read (or an essay that you’ve written) into a completely different genre and/or format of writing than is the norm of your discourse community (i.e. Transform a scholarly or formally written work into short story.
? After you make the transition, write a short reflective essay in which you explain: how you tackled the project, what changes you made, your personal response to your final project, and whether or not your work might be appreciated by your discourse community.
Restrictions: Whatever genre/form you choose to write in for this essay, the original message and content should remain the same. Only the genre or form in which you communicate the concept will change.
? to successfully transform your work, you will have to consider the “norms” for each genre that you choose to appropriate your text into.
The End Goal: to recognize that any form of writing requires your engagement within a discourse community (whether or not you consider yourself to be a part of the discourse community you are participating in). “Writing across the disciplines” doesn’t mean typing essays for different classes; it means trying on a new perspective, communicating in different ways, and adopting different sets of practices in order to better yourself and your capital “D” Discourse or “identity” in the long run. If you can adapt your writings/communicative methods for each situation and learn more about what other capital “D” Discourse communities need from you, you are worth more to your own Discourse community’s future progress.
