Geoscience career, development

Description

Description

By investigating a geoscience career, you will learn more about a specialty area (such as geographic information systems, natural hazards, urban planning, petroleum geology, meteorology, resource exploration, teaching, environmental geoscience, medical geography and many other areas), the work that people in these fields do, and the career options that exist in these areas. You will also learn about what preparation and qualifications are involved in entering these interesting and rewarding careers, and about job opportunities and salaries.

You are graded on the quality of your essay, how well you rank and review your peers’ essays to assess your knowledge and critical thinking skills, and how well/honestly you review your own essay (again, assessing your critical thinking skills).

There is a calibration exercise to help you get a feel on how to rate your and your peers’ essays - you need to be +/- 2 points to successfully go through the calibration exercise. The overall grade for the whole assignment is broken out as follows: your essay (45%), how well you rank your peers’ essays (30%), how well you complete the calibration exercise (10%), and your honest self-assessment (15%). After the completion of the Circuit assignment, I will go and regrade as needed. Your true grade for this assignment will be posted on Blackboard, not on Circuit.

Instructions

Select and investigate a geoscience career so that you can write a report that describes the career and what qualifications and education is required for someone in this career. Be sure to read one or more first-person accounts or essays on the selected career, written by someone who is working in that career. Comment on this first-person account in your report.

Start your career investigation by looking at the materials at http://www.aag.org/cs/careers and at https://www.americangeosciences.org/workforce/geoscience-careers-brochure to get an overview of geosciences careers. You can also do a web search for more specific information by searching on “meteorology careers”, “geology careers” (or similar phrases), and for particular geo careers that interest you.

Your written report must be between 300 and 750 words and must include a title, a description of the career, what people do in this field on a day-to-day basis, salary information, and what preparation or qualifications are required. Be sure to comment on a first-person account written by someone working in the field. Also include some reasons why this career is interesting to you and the significance of the career (to you or to society).
