COMPOSING the PAPER
Write a 1300 word paper comparing the two films you chosen for in the Semester Paper Proposal. 1300 is the minimum AND maximum word count. This is
NOT a paper about which film you think is better or which film you like better. It’s an analytical comparison of the films.
Choose three scenes from each film, and compare and contrast them as follows:
One scene from each film that in which the images (including mise-en-scène) reveal things about the characters and story that the dialogue and sound do
not reveal. Describe what you saw onscreen and what it tells you.
One scene from each film that reveals character through what the characters do - their behavior - and not through what they say. A scene for this part of the
assignment is defined as taking place between two characters in one location in continuous time.
One scene from each film that reflects the human condition. “The human condition is all of the characteristics and key events that compose the essentials of
human existence, including birth, growth, emotion, aspiration, conflict, and mortality.” - Wiki. It also includes things like the need to be loved, the human
capacity for good or evil, and core emotions human beings experience in the course of a lifetime.
You cannot write about scenes you already discussed in your weekly written responses.
Your scene comparisons have to be actual comparisons, not just separate descriiptions of each of the two scenes.
If it isn't clear already: comparative scene analysis is the core of your paper.
