Outlining the chapters of Gordon’s book, The Rise of Islam
(3 X 20 points = 60 points total)
One of the things I like about Gordon’s book is that each chapter has subsections, each of which has a
title. This makes it easier to do a structural analysis of the book, which in turns help in understanding how
Gordon constructs his arguments. This is extremely helpful for readers when they are encountering a large
amount of new information. For each of the first three chapters (numbered 1-30) of Gordon’s book,
everyone is to do the following three things:
- Construct an outline of the chapter by listing all subsections and their titles in order. While
Gordon does not number his subsections, you must do so. Note that the first subsection of each
chapter often serves as an introduction to the chapter, but does not always have a formal sub-title.
When this happens, you should do as per the example immediately following. Thus, the first
section of each chapter outline should look like this:
Chapter number: The title provided by Gordon - (Introduction) Points will be deducted if you don’t do this
- Subtitle provided by Gordon
- Subtitle provided by Gordon
- Etc. for all remaining subsections in that particular chapter
- In a few cases, a subsection of a chapter has additional subsections within it. In those cases, you
are to list them also, as per this model:
Chapter # - (Introduction)
- Subtitle
a. First sub-sub-section title
b. Second sub-sub-section title,
c. etc. - Subtitle
