Description
As part of this project, you will collaborate in a small group of classmates as a 'virtual team.' You will be assigned to a team during Week 2 by your instructor and provided a group discussion area in the course. You can begin working on your project as soon as your instructor has organized the teams. Your team will take the role of a management team that is presenting to the company’s upper management. Your team is proposing the implementation of a specific MIS system to solve a business problem. Your team will choose the business (it does not have to be a real business), the problem that the proposed system is intended to solve, and the type of system that your team is proposing to implement in order to solve the problem. Regardless of the type of solution you are proposing, your presentation must address the following:
Objective 1: Working in the Online Environment
You have experienced some of the difficulties of communication and timely interaction. This project will continue to be a challenge in working in this media. While the advantage of adding different skill sets of the various group members is positive, coordinating the efforts takes some organizing. As an upper-level course, this is a chance to apply some of the skills discussed in some of the earlier managerial courses (such as planning, organizing, leading, and controlling).
You may open up the chat feature of D2L if your group wishes to use this area for some of your communication.
Objective 2: The Methodology
In a related attachment, I have included a format of the paper with a methodology which is similar to the traditional System Development Life Cycle (SDLC). This format is a standard format which I am suggesting that you use on this project. This methodology should be transferable to almost any assignment that you may encounter in the workplace.
Objective 3: Submitted Products
As I mentioned above, the paper is a vehicle to achieve the learning outcomes just mentioned. To facilitate the construction of an actual paper, I have included some very specific references to appropriate components of the paper. You may include additional information which fits into your topic, but I will be looking for the paper to include elements from the text which illustrate an understanding and application of the course material. I am not looking for a great idea. I am looking for a well structured, compliant paper that demonstrates an application of the material covered in the course.
The project paper and related PowerPoint slides are similar to what would be expected from an in-class presentation except that the students do not have to get up in front of our 'virtual classroom' or submit a video. There are no set requirements for the presentation in terms of number of slides, format, or amount of data on the screen, but the PowerPoint slides should correspond to the written Group Case Project paper. That being said, here are some specific elements of a useful set of PowerPoint slides:
They should include a title page and list of the members of the group.
They should have a table of contents/outline of what is going to be covered.
Their sequence should track with a verbal presentation (in our case paper) just like would be done in an in-seat class or virtual delivery as a supporting component of the presentation (paper).
Business:
Credit Card Company Call Center. Customer Service Reps help customers who call in with questions or inquiries.
Problem:
Customers are waiting on hold for too long, and is causing the company's customer service rating to decline. Management thinks it could be caused by either inefficiency in the employees work day, or lack of staff to answer the calls.
New System:
An integrate system that has an employee time tracking feature as well as a call tracking system. The system is designed to keep track of when an employee clocks in and out - starting or ending the day, as well as break times. The system will also measure the amount of calls the employee takes a day, how long each of those calls are, and how much time is taken between each call.
Goal of Implementation:
- Figure out areas of inefficiency, allowing management to structure guidelines around expected call volume and how many calls each customer service rep should ideally be able to take a day.
- Cost-Benefit - determining whether management needs to increase the number of staff or not. If inefficiencies can be detected and fixed, then it could save the company on not hiring additional staff.
