Watch and Read Hamlet.
part 1 After reading and watching one of the 2 films of Hamlet offered above, answer these questions in two chunky paragraphs. (THIS IS NOT AN ESSAY! Be loose and exploratory.)
film 1: Mel Gibson version of Hamlet.
film 2: The Kenneth Brannagh version of Hamlet.
(Please if you haven't watched the movie, buy it and I will pay the cost of the movie, call me for the extra charges)
1.Which version did you watch? Did the film version match up with how you saw the play when you read it?
- How would you describe the interpretation of the character Hamlet in the play? What kind of Hamlet is he? (Use adjectives and discuss what he seems like.)
- What was the strongest about the film? What was weakest?
- If you could make your own film of Hamlet, what actor would you like to play Hamlet? What qualities or traits would that particular actor bring out in the character? (You can choose any actor, living or dead, and really try to convince me why he or she would make a great Hamlet!)
Part 2: In this Discussion, you will be watching a variety of actors interpret Soliloquy #4(Act 3, Scene One) in very different productions of Hamlet and then discussing those interpretations.
First, using the links below, watch diverse actors deliver Soliloquy #4.
Think about the interpretative choices made in each version:
How does Hamlet as a person seem different each time? (What is unique about each interpretation of the actors?)
What motivates each Hamlet?
What does each version make you feel or understand that others didn't?
Which one spoke to you more (and why?)
Write a 250+ word paper that states which version you preferred the most (name the actor) and discusses the interpretation's strengths and what it made you feel and know.
