This hands-on activity will familiarize you with the process of comparing fired cartridge cases to each other
using a comparison microscope. The following instructions will guide you through the steps to complete this
assignment.
Instructions:

1. Go to the following website: www.firearmsid.com
2. On the right hand side of the screen, click the REGISTER button.
3. Fill in the form to register for a free account. Login information will be emailed to you.
4. Login to your newly created free account.
5. Once logged in, click on the Cartridge Case ID-VCM link listed under Virtual Comparison Microscope.
6. Click on the Test One box on the upper right portion of the screen. This is your first unknown cartridge
   case recovered from the crime scene.
7. On the left side of the screen are your eight test fires from eight different firearms.
8. Using the virtual microscope, compare unknown (Test One) to the known test fires (Test Standards 1-8).
9. Click on the Test Two box on the upper right portion of the screen. This is your second unknown cartridge
   case recovered from the crime scene.
10. Repeat steps 8-9 for Test Two.
11. Click the attached file to see a diagram of the virtual microscope and control buttons.
12. Upon completion of your comparisons, document and upload your results.
    Example of results:
    Test No. 1 was identified as being fired through the barrel of the firearm that fired test standard _ (choices are 1-8). Test No. 2 was identified as being fired through the barrel of the firearm that fired test standard _
    (choices are 1-8)
