Health Issue

For the final project, you are asked to prepare a written paper on a health issue. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate what you have learned through the course material (readings, activities and assignments) to analyze and provide recommended action(s) to address a health issue of your choice. You may build on a topic that you explored previously (e.g., for your briefing note), and this is advantageous as you will be familiar with the issue and evidence, and have received feedback from a group member. Preparing this paper will involve searching the scientific literature (peer-reviewed journals and grey literature, as appropriate); critically appraising the literature in the context of understanding the details of a particular healthcare or health system issue, root cause (determinants), who is affected (stakeholders), and interventions to improve the health of affected population (including consideration of determinants and stakeholders as well as legal and ethical considerations). The outcome should be a comprehensive, clear and well organized paper. This paper is worth 30% of your grade in this course. Instructions Your paper should include the following elements: Introduction to the issue - Describe the health issue that you have selected. This should include an identification of the population(s) affected (e.g., immigrants and refugees, residents of a particular geographic area, injection drug users, seniors, etc.). Describe the burden of illness/disease/injury, or prevalence of risk factors/behaviours, as appropriate (depending on the issue). This includes whether there is differential prevalence/burden among certain sub-populations (e.g., cultural groups, socio-economic status, geographic location, gender, etc.). (8 marks) Relationship with health - Discuss how this issue may influence the health of affected population(s). This should consider health from a holistic perspective (physical, mental, social, etc.). (8 marks) Etiology/determinants – Explore the cause(s) of this health issue. This should consider determinants broadly (i.e., consider the social determinants of health). This may include a discussion of risk and protective factors if applicable.Include health care system considerations. (8 marks) Legal and ethical factors – Discuss relevant ethical (biomedical and/or public health ethics considerations, as appropriate), and legal factors. (8 marks) Solutions/Response – Identify and describe potential actions that may be taken to promote health and prevent disease/illness/injury related to this issue, and the rationale for why these interventions might be effective. Support your arguments with evidence from current literature. This should go beyond the brainstorming performed for Assignment 4. The material of actions (including advocacy) presented in Module 4 should be considered here. (12 marks) Recommendation(s): Recommend a solution/response. (8 marks) References and academic writing: As per APA (2010). (8 marks) Format The paper should be double-spaced, excluding tables/figures and references, Times New Roman 12 pt font with 1” margins, excluding the references. There is no limit to the number of references that you can provide.
