Healthcare: Developing an Advocacy Campaign An advocacy campaign is speaking or acting on behalf of the other peoples. One of the fundamental components of nursing is during the professional development is patient advocacy where the nurses' organizations aim at promoting, advocating and striving to protect health, safety and the rights of patients and population affected by specific illness. The health personnel advocates for the health of a group of people or individuals thus raising their voices. The three attributes of health advocacy are protecting the autonomy of justice, standing up for patients who cannot respond on their own and promoting justice for the patients. The first step to achieve a successful advocacy campaign is identifying the population affected by and issues it is facing. The second thing is to identify advocacy campaigns which will be researching within the population and explain the attributes that will make the campaigns effective. After getting the information, the third step will be to develop a plan for the health advocacy campaign which will seek to create a new policy or change the existing ones to deal with the problems affecting the population. In the plan, there should be a description of public health issues and proposed policy solution, specific objectives to be implemented, data and evidence which will be used substantiate the proposed plan. In this paper, I will identify the population with health issues, summarize advocacy campaigns and develop a health advocacy campaign for the issue (Sagrillo, 2013). My health developing an advocacy campaign is on black American teenagers who are infected with HIV/AIDS Durham City North Carolina, United States. The Durham population has continually grown from 2010, but there is decreased in birthrate among teens since there is the increased rate of HIV/AIDS thus cannot give birth. The Durham County government has designed a strategic plan to help the country attain health goals. These plans include decreasing health disparities within the community, strengthening the well-being of individuals and families through prevention and education and finally partnering with the community resources to increase the access to the health and wellness services to the people. The government decided to initiate these policies since there were increased cases of HIV/AIDS among African Americans compared to other races but the issue and not been addressed for a long time. The cumulative HIV cases were about 5% from the year 2010, but the population was unable to talk about the crisis and attract the attention of authorities. One of the advocacy campaigns which were conducted in Durham was addressing the drug abuse in the area which had increased in recent times. Another advocacy campaign was addressing the rights of children
due to misuse of children in terms of child labor, early marriages, and denial of the right to education. Some of the approaches which led to the success of the campaigns were the grassroots approach, top-down model, community organizing and readiness, community organizing and mobilization and assessment approaches. The campaigns succeeded in making a high number of children go to school especially the African Americans. The community was able to absorb the ideas which the groups intended to put across hence the community benefited. The three attributed which made the campaign effective was protecting the autonomy of the children, promoting the rights of children since they suppressed by their parents and campaigning for justice of children who had dropped out school and those who were subjected to child labor. I will develop a plan which I will use to conduct my health an advocacy campaign in Durham County where the cases of HIV/AIDS among the African Americans. First, I will set goals which I want to achieve at the end of the campaign. The goals include sensitization of the increased cases of HIV among the population. The plan also intends to advise teenagers on different ways to prevent the spread of HIV to reduce the increased cases. Lastly, the plan will mobilize government and the members of the community on the ways in which the cases of HIV aims will be reduced in the African Americans community. The government can provide resources such as books and pay counselors who will become advice the young generation to avoid having sex in their teenage lives. The community will also put on a check to ensure the morals of teenagers are protected (County, 2018). Second, I will define the main message which I will deliver to the teenagers in Durham County especially the African Americans. The message will be creating awareness to the African Americans teenager on the number of teenagers infected with HIV and how the numbers are increasing. The government will also be sensitized the issue so that it can put measures which will control the increasing rate of HIV cases. The government will also formulate policies which will enhance the control of the infection. One of the policies I will initiate is compulsory education for teenagers from African American communities. Another policy is free medication for teenagers with HIV/AIDS. Third, I will build a team which will carry out the grassroots activities to ensure the set goals are achieved. I will team up with six professionals who will help me in organizing the activities I have planned. I will ensure I develop a good relationship with the locals to ensure grassroots advocacy is successful. I will also use the local leaders to ensure they link my campaign with authorities where we can get government resources and initiate the new policies.
