Slide 3: Problem Statement

Slide Content: How can our community implement effective, evidence-based policies to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity and improve long-term health outcomes for its youth?

Speaker Notes: My problem statement is framed as a question: "How can our community implement effective, evidence-based policies to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity and improve long-term health outcomes for its youth?" This problem is not simply about weight; it is a complex issue with far-reaching consequences for the health, well-being, and future of our children. Addressing this problem requires a strategic approach that involves policy and community-level interventions.

Slide 4: Background

Slide Content:

Childhood obesity is a significant public health crisis, defined as a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for children of the same age and sex.

It is a precursor to a host of chronic diseases in adulthood, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers.

Our local community has seen a concerning rise in childhood obesity rates over the past decade, exceeding both state and national averages.

The issue is a product of socioeconomic, environmental, and behavioral factors, including poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, and limited access to healthy food options.

Speaker Notes: Childhood obesity is a public health crisis that is escalating both nationally and here in our own community. It's defined as a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for children and adolescents. The importance of addressing this now cannot be overstated. We know that childhood obesity is a strong predictor of chronic diseases later in life. This means that if we don’t act now, we are setting up our children for a future of significant health challenges, increasing the burden on our healthcare system and reducing their quality of life. The need for immediate action is driven by the alarming trend of rising rates in our community, which have surpassed both state and national averages.
