Henry IV, Part 1 from director's perspective

In the scene in Glendower's castle (3.1), the script requires that Glendower's daughter Catrin speak and sing in Welsh. Because Mortimer, newly her husband, feels frustrated by his inability to understand her language ("This is the deadly spite that angers me—/ My wife can speak no English, I no Welsh" (198-99), one cannot translate the Welsh into English without radically changing the dynamics of the scene. Given that the Welsh must be retained but that few people in most modern audiences speak Welsh, what effect or effects would you aim to produce by having her speak and sing in Welsh? If you wish you can focus sharply your analysis by looking at the dynamics of one or two moments when Lady Mortimer speaks or sings.
