1. Restoration Colonies. Compare three of the new colonies that developed in the late 1600s. What do you find remarkable about these colonies? Which one would you want to visit, and why? Use details from Chapters 4 and 5 to develop your main points.
2. Exploitation, War and Violence. Construct an essay with three examples of organized violence in the era of 1650-1750. What do you see at the root of the violence?
3. Eighteenth Century America. Using insights from Chapter 5, describe how life was changing in the British colonies in the era from 1700-1750. What social, political, economic or cultural changes do you see?
4. Spanish Missions. What do you find remarkable about the Spanish mission era in California in the late 1700s? Do you see California in the 1700s as similar to the British colonies of the same era, or do you see California as a different strand of our history?
5. Colonial Crisis. Explain how the political consciousness of Americans changed in the two decades leading up to Independence. You may also include the era of the Revolutionary War. Mention specific events or leaders in Chapter 6.
6. Confederation to Constitution. Discuss some of the key events leading up to the adoption of the Constitution. Describe a few key arguments. How do political debates of the era reflect broader conflicts or changes in the society?
7. Three key terms. Develop an essay on a theme that you see connecting three key terms from the handouts. Put each key term in bold the first time you use it. Include three pictures to reinforce the key points.
