History and the impact of the DSM

This week, you're going to have the opportunity to discuss the history of the DSM with your professor. After reviewing the history of the DSM and learning about some MFTs' attitudes towards the provision of diagnosis, arrange for a Skype or WebEx appointment with your professor. For planning purposes, you can expect to meet for approximately 20-30 minutes. To arrange your appointment, send an email to your professor using your NCU email account. If you do not have an NCU account, contact your Academic Advisor and the IT department immediately, because the absence of such email may prevent successful communication with your professor during this course. During your appointment, you will want to be prepared to discuss the following questions: Why would the provision of diagnosis be necessary for the contemporary American healthcare system? What aspects of a systems-based practitioner should you keep in mind while providing a diagnosis? After reviewing the assigned materials for this week, what does the research suggest about culture and mental illness around the world? Some researchers discuss the predominant perception of a person with a mental illness as being non-productive. If it is a negative stereotype rather than reality, why do you think this bias predominates? To what extent do you think that stigma still exists for those diagnosed with a chronic and severe mental illness?
