At the end of today’s lecture, we discussed how art historian Rosalind Krauss expands the field of sculpture by using a pair of terms that sculpture was traditionally not (i.e., she begins the expansion by defining “sculpture” as “not-landscape” and “not-architecture”).
Think about the field of architecture. What pair of terms would you use to create an “expanded field of architecture”? Draw a diagram of your own version of architecture’s “expanded field” based on the model that Krauss provides on page 37 of her article “Sculpture in the Expanded Field.” Write a short explanation of your diagram and provide at least one example of an architectural work that would occupy each of the three new positions opened up by this logical expansion (note: if you can’t think of a historical example, you can make up a hypothetical work).
